Breakfast Seminar - Business Risk from a Changing Climate

The climate is already changing. Reduce your risk from climate change by arming yourself with the latest information on climate change adaptation, including:  Camden Flooding, December 2003

  • what scientists are predicting for the future of the London and UK climate,
  • how you can reduce your organisation's risk and seize opportunities,
  • how your organisation's assets may be vulnerable to climate change, and
  • asses if your organisation could be liable for inaction or is inadequately insured.

This seminar was aimed for people working with key climate change risk areas such as property and infrastructure, business continuity, risk management, green spaces, vulnerable people, food security, development, business planning, or for those with a general interest in the subject.

The seminar was hosted by the Camden Climate Change Alliance and will be delivered by leading sustainability consultancy Article 13. You will be treated to breakfast and there will be opportunities for networking.

  1. How climate change will impact the UK:
    a) DEFRA’s predictions
    b) Gulf stream and changing weather patterns
    c) Seasonal changes
    Interactive: What do you think weather changes in London will be?
  2. How climate change will impact London:
    a) Mayoral Office predictions – “London’s Warming” (and DEFRA and MET office)
    b) Precipitation, flooding
    c) Seasonality and temperatures, urban heat island effects
    Interactive: What do you think the impacts on Londoners and businesses in the capital will be?
  3. Business liabilities from climate change inaction: 
    a) Transport systems and infrastructure
    b) Buildings and the built environment
    c) Fuel poverty, fuel costs
    d) Water table impacts (increased flood risks) and decreasing water supply impacts
    Interactive: What should you as a business be doing to respond to these changes?
  4. Responses and opportunities:
    a) Low hanging fruit, e.g. positive tourism impacts?
    b) Responses which also help reduce carbon emissions: green roofs/walls, unpaving hard standing areas, low carbon summer cooling.
    c) Positive impacts such as increased tourism, adaptation in house building and retrofitting
