Camden Council today joined thousands of individuals, schools, businesses and organisations across the country in a new campaign to tackle climate change.

The Council has backed the 10:10 campaign as a further symbol of its ongoing commitment to reduce CO2 emissions.

By signing up Camden Council has pledged to work to reduce its CO2 emissions by 10 per cent in 2010. This builds on our existing plans to tackle our contribution to climate change and meet our existing 8.5% reduction target by March 2011.

Camden Council Leader Keith Moffitt, said: “Camden Council has a strong record on tackling climate change and reducing carbon emissions. It’s essential that we inspire as many residents and partners and possible to join us in this aim. By committing to 10:10 we want to demonstrate how important it is for people to get together and take action collectively to protect the environment."

Councillor Chris Knight, Camden Council’s Executive Member for Environment, said: "Residents have told us they want us to do everything we can to protect the environment. The Council's 10:10 pledge again underlines this important commitment.”

Camden Council has already established its carbon emissions baseline and is working with the Carbon Trust to develop a detailed, costed programme of carbon reduction measures, and has already achieved the following:

  • A 15.27% reduction in energy consumption between 2005-6 and 2008-9 from council buildings on corporate energy contracts.
  • Savings of over £80,000 and 577 tCO2 per year from our Revolving Energy Fund.
  • Over 70% of the Council’s fleet is powered by greener fuels (including LPG and electrically powered).
  • High recognition by staff of our Small Steps Big Difference campaign and over 150 Environment champions in 23 buildings helping to change behaviours.

Camden is also already encouraging families and businesses to reduce their carbon footprint through our Small Steps Big Difference campaign and Green Promise pledge scheme.

Camden Council is committed to making Camden a low carbon and low waste borough. The Council’s initiatives include:

  • Warmer, cheaper, greener - an expanded insulation programme for all households
  • The Camden Climate Change Alliance, launched in November 2008 and which already includes 67 private and public organisations working together to cut carbon emissions
  • Exploring the opportunities for installing and promoting Combined Heat and Power in Camden
  • Investing in and encouraging demand for car clubs in the borough, one of many initiatives in our comprehensive Green Transport Strategy
  • Our Small Steps Big Difference campaign and Green Promise scheme, which will soon be promoted via Green Camden - our new environmental advice service (from October)
  • Improving our recycling service by introducing mixed plastics into our recycling collections from 1st October and organic waste from 1st April 2010
  • Support for food growing through the Good Food for Camden programme

"Businesses can take advantage of the Alliance to learn how to calculate their carbon footprint, and once they have, they can then measure their carbon reduction. This can then be used as a motivational communication message."
